Why I Waited 15 Years to Become a Course Director (My Dive Journey)

Rafi Majid

As the latest Course Director in town, my journey has been a long, challenging, yet incredibly rewarding one. For 15 years, I could have ventured down this path – so why the hesitation? Let's dive into the deep end together. We'll explore my early days as a diver, my experiences owning The Dive Company, and the unwavering support that finally pushed me to conquer the Course Director Training Course (CDTC).

My Dive Into the Deep End

The diving world caught my attention from an early age. The mystery, the excitement, the adventure - everything about it lured me in. I was always drawn to the vastness of the ocean and its breath-taking beauty. I wanted to explore the unexplored, and it was this curiosity that led me to diving.

It was challenging initially, but nothing worth having comes easy. I dedicated my time, effort, and resources to learn and perfect my diving skills. The journey was tough, but my passion for the underwater world kept me going. I embraced the challenges and learned from each one of them.

My First Dive: An Unforgettable Experience

My first dive was an exhilarating experience. It was in Pulau Hantu. Although the visibility was poor, the feeling of being surrounded by water, the silence, and the unknown, it was all a bit overwhelming but exciting at the same time. I was in awe of the underwater world, and this experience ignited my desire to dive deeper and explore more.

The journey of becoming a diver was filled with many firsts. Each dive taught me something new, and I became more comfortable and confident underwater. The underwater world became my second home, and I was eager to share this experience with others after obtaining my PADI Instructor certification more than 20 years ago.

The Dive Company: Building a Dream

The Dive Company

My passion for diving led me to establish The Dive Company. The aim was to create a platform for aspiring divers and a community for diving enthusiasts. As the owner, I was involved in every aspect - from managing the operations to mentoring the divers. Despite the challenges that came with managing the dive shop, it was an enriching experience.

The Dive Company became a popular name in the diving community. It became not just a dive shop; it was a place where divers could share their experiences, learn from each other, and most importantly, feel a sense of belonging.

My Support System: The Push I Needed

Running The Dive Company was not a one-man show. It was the collective effort of my dedicated dive crews, my supportive family, and my son, Dylan. They were my backbone, constantly encouraging me to explore new avenues in the diving world. Their belief in me was a driving force that motivated me to take the next big step in my diving career.

It was their constant encouragement that led me to consider the CDTC. They knew I had the potential and the expertise, and they believed it was time for me to step up and take this new role.

Becoming a Course Director: The Challenge I Was Waiting For

At last, after 15 years of pondering the path, I took the plunge into the CDTC. It wasn't going to be easy, and I knew it. But I was ready. The program was intense – the exact kind of test I craved.

The journey was tough, but every step was worth it. The learning, the experiences, the challenges - everything contributed to my growth as a diver and a mentor. Finally, after tireless effort, I earned my certification. I was now a Course Director!

Inspiring the Next Wave of Divers

As a Course Director, I am now in a position to inspire and train the next generation of diving professionals. It is a responsibility I am proud to take on. I am excited to share my knowledge, my experiences, and my passion for diving with others and help them embark on their own diving journey.

Being a Course Director is not just about training others; it is about inspiring them, motivating them, and helping them understand the beauty and mystery of the underwater world. It is about passing on the torch and creating a new generation of divers who will continue to explore and protect our oceans.
